On October 10, 2020, the opening ceremony of sanya tram demonstration line was successfully held, marking the official operation of Sanya tram carrying passengers.

Sanya tram demonstration Line, as the first rail transit line in Hainan Province, has the characteristics of energy saving, environmental protection, comfort and safety, which can lead the expansion of urban space layout, improve residents' public travel experience and enhance the quality of urban transportation.

Sanya modern tram demonstration line project starts at the intersection of Shengli Road and Jiangang Road in the south and ends at Sanya railway Station in the north. The 8.37km demonstration line is equipped with 15 platforms and 11 trains. Each train consists of 5 carriages, with 60 seats and a maximum capacity of 362 passengers per train.

The train is designed to run at a speed of 70km/h, with the maximum speed in urban areas controlled at 50km/h and the average travel speed of the whole journey around 20km/h. It will take about 35 minutes to get to Jiangang Road from Sanya Railway Station.

Sanya tram is powered by the high-energy supercapacitor energy storage system developed and produced by Shanghai Away Technology Development Co., Ltd. to realize the whole line operation without contact to the network. Instead of laying wires along the traditional route, the vehicle enters the station to charge and only needs 30 seconds to complete the charge, which maximized the restoration of urban landscape, safe, reliable and green.
